Did someone say plan an Expedition? 🎒
The Planning
As part of their Expedition Challenge badge work, our Scouts were set a real challenge. The criteria asks them to plan and complete a two-day expedition including a night away, mapping out a route with rest and meal stops, working out journey timings, and navigating using maps and bus or rail timetables. For our Scouts, that meant plotting a 10-mile hike and using public transport to get from our hall to Weymouth South Scout hall.
There was also careful thought needed around kit – choosing the right rucksacks, walking gear, wet weather layers and first aid supplies. Since they had to carry everything themselves, including sleeping bags, working out exactly what would fit (and what they could do without!) was a challenge in itself.
The Expedition Weekend
At the end of term, two teams of three Scouts and two leaders took on the expedition, with one more Scout joining for the sleepover at Weymouth South Scout hall. It was a hot one, but both teams pulled together to navigate the full 10-mile route and independently use both train and bus to get there.
Teamwork, leadership and decision-making were all put into practice, keeping track of time, carrying their own kit, and adapting plans when things didn’t quite go to schedule. Leaders were on hand throughout but only stepped in with suggestions when it was really needed; this was very much the Scouts’ own expedition.
On arrival at South Weymouth Scout hall, everyone tucked into a well-earned pizza before relaxing with some chatter and a game of football ahead of settling in for the night.
Sunday morning saw Scouts packing up while breakfast baps sizzled away, courtesy of the lovely Lisa and Steve. From there it was down to the beach for a dip in the sea overlooking Portland, before a dash for the bus and train home with plenty of chatter along the way.
A brilliant weekend of adventure, independence and new experiences. Well done to all the Scouts who took part, and a huge thank you to the parents and leaders who helped make it possible.
Now… on to planning the next one!
